The Dyck Arboretum of the Plains is a not-for-profit public garden operating under the auspices of Hesston College. Established in 1981, it has mature display gardens with perennials, shrubs and trees on 13 acres surrounding a pond, and a 16-acre Prairie Window Project with larger ecosystem plantings. Visitors can explore all areas of the grounds along the main and auxiliary path system. A variety of limestone and clay art pieces by local artists complement the display gardens. Facilities include a Visitor and Education Center, Prairie Pavilion and Horticulture and Utility Building complete with a Prairie Discovery Lab. These locations allow the Arboretum to host conferences, meetings, weddings, educational classes and events. The mission of the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains is to cultivate transformative relationships between people and the land. The Arboretum's programs primarily follow four overarching goals: 1) to promote native landscaping and enhance biodiversity in urban and rural landscapes through propagation and distribution of native plants to the general public, 2) to promote understanding of the prairie from both ecological and cultural perspectives, 3) to provide a setting where visitors can experience prairie plants along with adaptable perennials in attractive displays and learn how to successfully use these plants in their own landscapes, and 4) to provide a beautiful place for recreation or quiet reflection.
